Current Conditions and Improvement of Health Education by Elementary School Health Teachers

Abstract
The research is a narrative study to identify the current conditions, problems, and improvement of health education by elementary school health teachers and was conducted from April 3 - April 13, 2006 with subjects of 159 health teachers employed in the elementary schools of K Province. Collected data was analyzed per frequency, rate, average, and standard deviation using SPSS 12.0 Program. The results of the research are as follows : The actual condition of the health education was that all 100% of the subject schools have conducted health education and the amount of hours taught per annum showed range of 100-149 as the highest. The category considered most important was ¡®teaching health education during class time¡¯ and the subject where most teaching hours were applied was ¡®emergency procedure and medication¡¯.
For the ¡®class activity time pattern¡¯, it was mostly ¡®text book utilization¡¯, and as per method of teaching, visual & audio program and lecturing was mostly done and evaluation conducted after the health education class. As for mostly taught content, it was identified to be ¡®sex education¡¯. For the problem in current health education system, ¡®lack of material¡¯ topped the handicapped list and for the degree of difficulties per each factors of health education, ¡®absence of individualized subject¡¯ has shown to be the highest. For the areas requiring improvement, it was identified to be necessity of health education as separate subject, health education being designated as regular subject and training for the health teachers. Especially, as a suggestive method of improvement in health education, ¡®new establishment of health education as individualized subject¡¯ was suggested to be highest priority. As the result of the research shows, the current elementary school health education is being conducted with absence of individualized subject and structured curriculum and there for is being taught without connectivity. Therefore, for enhancement of health education, independent health subject must be developed and organized health education must be conducted within legal curriculum.
